Yoga Philosophy: 2nd Chakra and Resilience

As we move up through our Chakras from a slightly different angle this go around, we have arrived at the 2nd, or Svadhisthana Chakra, at times referred to as the Sacral Chakra. This Chakra is loaded with energy and meaning (I know… aren’t they all!) and in some ways it holds the insight to our own resilience. Our Svadhisthana Chakra holds not only our passion and creativity, it also holds a great deal of our emotional energy and storage.

Our ability to “go with the flow” and stay connected to the grounding in the Muladhara Chakra that we discussed last month, is largely contained in this energy space. When we hold and store that emotional energy in this space, which in our asana practice we largely identify with the hips, we tend to be more rigid, and have less ability to bounce back and be springy. Some questions to ask here are critical to moving forward with our connection with our energy centers: what are we holding onto? Is there a barrier to our flow? What is holding us back?

One aspect of looking at our resilience is to ask ourselves are we prepared for this sort of inventory? Part of connecting our Svadhisthana Chakra with the Muladhara Chakra is checking that we feel grounded in the space and checking in with where we are emotionally. The ability to regroup and recover stems from the health and well-being of this beautiful energy center.

Though not all of us have the resilience level of a Michael Singer, and can be open all the time, and let anything go… it is beautiful to work towards that place. When the Sacral Chakra is open we have the free flow of ideas and inspirations.

Allow yourself this week to take a look at your energy connections in the Svadhisthana Chakra. Ask yourself if taking a look at the holdings is safe, and if so being king and caring in how you do so. There are likely some stored emotions and energies that we can let go of and move beyond. This prepares us for moving up to the Third Chakra!
