Meditation on Forgiveness

There is so much in yoga that is wrapped up in the concept of discipline. Part of the training of the mind and the body asks that we devote ourselves to the practice. Our commitment to the practice makes the quieting of the mind easier. Though we know there will be bumps along the way, continuing our practice makes those waves easier to ride out. We love to take time to reconnect with our meditation practice, or to try a new technique or process that allows us to move our meditation in a different direction.

This month we are connecting with forgiveness in a beautiful meditation from Gabrielle Bernstein’s Judgement Detox, as forgiveness takes quite a bit of discipline and often active work. Give this a go this weekend if you have something or someone in need of forgiveness or softening.

Meditation on Forgiveness:

Find a comfortable seated position. Open a notebook and write: I am willing to forgive.

Gently close your eyes and prepare for meditation.

Take a deep breath in. And release your breath.

Continue to breathe deeply in and out. Breathe in and out through your nose. Breath in. Breath out.

When you are ready, invite an image of the person whom you have judged. Once again see them standing before you. They’re brighter now. You feel less attached. The cord has been cut and you’re already feeling relief.

See them standing before you and honor their presence. Honor their innocence. Honor their struggle. Honor their light.

Breathe in. Breathe out.

Gently repeat this mantra as you breathe long and deep:

I choose to forgive you.

I see you in light.

I choose to forgive you.

I see you in light.

I forgive you.

I see you in light.

I forgive you.

I see you in light.

Repeat these until you begin to feel some relief.

Repetition of this meditation, and these mantra spaces as needed are a steady space for discipline in our practice and can change the way our brain react, and the way we are able to find spaces of stillness. Let’s forgive someone, maybe even ourselves over the next week!
