Getting Grounded: Muladhara-1st Chakra

Muladhara, root chakra

Muladhara, root chakra

As we set our sights on a New Year, many of us will make New Year’s Resolutions, and many of us will set a broader intention for the new year, rather than a specific intention.

Perhaps this is the “Year of Letting Go.” (I have been toying with this one :), “Year of Wellness,” “Year of Courage.”

Whatever speaks to you in this time of beginnings, we at Verapose hope to be a part of your new beginnings and new intentions.

Energetically speaking, the 1st Chakra: Muladhara: the Root Chakra, is a beautiful place to explore in this time of beginnings and time of intentions.

The 1st Chakra is located at the base of the spine and is the origin of energy through the body.

This is place where we establish our sense of security and safety, where we connect with earth, and all the stability that lies within that connection.

This is the foundation of our energy, as well as our practice.

In many ways, our Muladhara Chakra, can be thought of as the energy center that connects us with our most basic needs.

Once we have established those basic needs, we are able to move up to the higher channels of energy, and sources of need throughout ourselves.

Often in yoga practices, we develop this sense of grounding, and connection prior to beginning any movement, so as to be able to rely on that connection.

From that strong, grounded, foundation, we can build a beautiful practice.

In your next yoga class, pay attention to your centering practice; the time you devote at the beginning of class to coming within, and notice those sensations of grounding.

Notice the sensations of the body on the floor, wherever it may be touching the earth.

See if you can find in those connections both the sensation of rooting into the earth, as well as the sensation of lift that comes from that sense of grounding.

As the breath travels towards the foundational spaces, it also reverberates, creating a sense of lift in the body.

As you contemplate your yearly intention/resolution (if this is something you do), allow yourself to start from the ground up, setting that strong base and foundation from which to build everything else upon.
