Pose of the Month Cat/Cow Marjaryasana/Biltilasana

We move from the month of clarity to a month where we celebrate and recognize harmony in our lives. Yoga is a quest of harmony; harmony between the body and the breath, the breath and the mind, the mind and the universe, our energies with one another. For me there is nothing more soothing than when I come into a yoga class buzzing, mind darting, and then ALL of me comes into harmony with the other energies in the room, settling in and coming into that “yoga space.”

Many yoga poses have a natural, almost harmonic, counterpose, a pose that engages the opposing muscles groups and energy centers. Though I LOVE a good downward dog, and will move into that pose all on its own, when paired with a good upward dog it is perfection. There are some poses that naturally come in pairs, and our pose(s) of the month are natural fits together, and are actually rarely separated from one another.

Cat/Cow or Marjaryasana/Biltilasana are two poses that find great harmony with one another. They also allow us to discover where in the body we are holding tension, and provides a beautiful space to move through it.

Moving into Cat/Cow:

  • Come onto hands and knees. With wrists directly under the shoulders, and knees under the hips.
  • Allow the spine to be long and fluid. Shoulder blades moving towards the hips.
  • On an inhale, allow the heart to float forward reaching between the shoulders.
  • Though the belly drops, keep the abdominal muscles engaged to support the spine.
  • On the exhale reach the reverse side of the heart towards the sky.
  • Here the belly scoops in and lifts the spine, creating space between the vertebrae.
  • Continue the movements with the breath, for as many rounds as feels good.

Benefits of Cat/Cow:

  • Massages the organs.
  • Increases/maintains flexibility of the spine.
  • Opens both the front and back side of the body.
  • Provides a great place to connect with the breath.

Find some harmony for yourself this weekend!
