Yoga Philosophy: Satya – Truthfulness – Non-Lying

As we wrap up 2019, we get the chance to sit with the truth of how this year went for us. For some of us it will be cause to celebrate, and have moments to celebrate. For others there may have been challenges to sit with or to overcome. Having a moment to relax with our own story, knowing that we are about to move ourselves into a new chapter can be a moment of perseverance and rewarding. As Brene Brown says “You either walk inside your own story and own it, or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness.”

Our Yama this month is all about not-lying, and seeing things as they are rather than how we wish they would be. We often see this as truthfulness and tapping into our own truth, that universal space of knowing and understanding. This weekend may be a good time to prep for the New Year by reflecting on the truth of this past year.

Some ways that we Yogis get in touch with our truth to prep for the next year:

  • Meditation! I am certain you saw this coming 🙂 Meditation is a great space to reflect on the joys and challenges that we hold, and decide how to process this space.
  • Yoga Nidra: Diving into these layers of consciousness can connect us more deeply to our truth. Allowing ourselves this rest can promote healing and get us ready for the next year.
  • Sound journeys: Whether through gongs, or sound journeys, we have the chance to connect with our truth when our ‘monkey mind’ is as calm as we can get it.
  • Asana practice: Being in touch with what brings us relaxation is an important part of our own practice, and leads us to spaces of our own truth. If we lean towards a more vigorous practice, we may try opening up to something more restorative, and visa versa.

Let’s see how we can relax into our truth this next week as we ponder our Intention word for 2020! Courtney and I will report ours next week 🙂
